Minimony vs. elopement: which is right for you?
Two beautiful ways to marry small. Here is how to tell them apart, and pick.
None
Somewhere between the courthouse and the two-hundred-guest ballroom, there is a whole world of small, beautiful ways to get married. Two of the most popular right now are the elopement and the minimony. They sound similar, and people mix them up constantly, but they are genuinely different days. Here is how to tell which one is yours.
What is an elopement?
Traditionally, an elopement was just the two of you. Today it has softened a little, and often includes a small handful of witnesses, but the spirit is the same: intimate, spontaneous, low on logistics, focused entirely on the couple. An elopement is about the vows and the moment, not the guest experience.
What is a minimony?
A minimony is a small, complete wedding. You still have a real ceremony, a reception, flowers, a cake, and guests, usually up to about thirty of them. It looks and feels like a traditional wedding. It is just scaled to the people who actually matter. Think of it as a full wedding with the guest list trimmed to the ones you love.
The simplest way to think about it
An elopement is about the two of you. A minimony is about the two of you plus your closest people, having a real, whole celebration together.
How to choose
Choose an elopement if...
- You want the day to be just the two of you, or nearly
- Planning stresses you out and you would rather skip it
- The vows matter more to you than the party
- You love the idea of something spontaneous and private
Choose a minimony if...
- You want your closest people there to witness it
- You still want the dress, the flowers, the cake, the first dance
- You want a real wedding, just not a huge one
- You would regret not having any celebration at all
A minimony keeps the guests, the cake, and the send-off. Just fewer people, more love.
You do not have to choose alone
At Gateley Hill Gardens, we host both. Our Cake & Punch and Minimony weddings are built for exactly this in-between space, small enough to feel intimate, complete enough to feel like a real wedding day. Up to 30 guests, a real chapel, flowers, cake, and someone to handle all of it so you can just be present.
Whether you land closer to an elopement or a full minimony, we can shape the day around it. Come see the chapel and we will help you figure out which version is yours.
Questions we get all the time
What is the difference between a minimony and an elopement?
An elopement is centered on just the couple, sometimes with a few witnesses, and skips most of the traditional celebration. A minimony is a small but complete wedding, usually up to about 30 guests, with a ceremony, reception, flowers and cake.
How many guests come to a minimony?
Usually up to about 30. At Gateley Hill Gardens, our Cake and Punch and Minimony weddings are built for up to 30 guests, with the option to add more up to 70.
Is a minimony cheaper than a full wedding?
Yes. Because the guest list and reception are smaller, a minimony costs far less than a traditional wedding. Our Cake and Punch wedding starts at $2,900 all-inclusive.
Can you elope at Gateley Hill Gardens?
Yes. We host intimate weddings of every size, from just the two of you to a full minimony of 30 guests. We are happy to shape the day around what you want.
